The Personal Pivot
Exactly a decade ago, I was perched on a "fantasy car" (float), draped in feathers and stones. Looking down at the sea of people, I realized that Carnival isn't just a party—it’s a high-stakes business ecosystem. Every country does it differently. From the satirical floats in Portugal to the "Carnival Villages" in St. Maarten and the technical precision of Rio, the diversity of opinion is as vast as the costumes. In my own country, Panama, its something that can't be unpassed since mostly everyone just drive for hours to be at the "Tuna", "El PH", to support their "Calle Arriba vs Calle Abajo", can't missed the "Topon" and dance for 4 days straight with the "Murga" and "Tamborito".
Some see it as a tradition to be preserved; others see it as a digital frontier for brand activation.
The 2026 Digital Shift Today, being "at the top of trends" means moving from spectacle to substance. In the current marketing landscape, we are seeing three major shifts:
Phygital Integration: Brands aren't just sponsoring floats; they’re using NFC-enabled wristbands to turn attendees into data points, offering real-time "micro-rewards" as they pass certain checkpoints.
AI as Co-Strategist: We’re seeing event planners use "Digital Doppelgängers" (AI simulations) to test how crowds will react to certain visual stimuli before the first bead is even glued.
The "Employee-as-Ambassador" Model: The most successful brands this year are highlighting the "makers"—the artisans and engineers—realizing that in 2026, consumers value the process as much as the product.
The Verdict: Carnival proves that to stay relevant, you must be willing to reinvent yourself every year while keeping the core "engine" running perfectly. If your marketing feels stagnant, ask yourself: Am I just watching the parade, or am I building the float?

On another view, people see the sequins but I remember the weight of the headpiece. 🎭✨
10 years ago, I had the chance to be on one of those massive Carnival floats. From the outside, it’s a three-minute explosion of color. From the inside? It’s months of engineering, thousands of hours of hand-stitching, and a logistical operation that would make a Fortune 500 company sweat.
Here is a picture back then :)
